Environmental Performance of Wastes and Secondary Materials in Engineered Systems

Protection of human health and ecological systems, conservation of resources, and the development of a sustainable environment drive this research focus area.

Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) the US Congress charged the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “to prevent pollution and conserve natural resources and energy by managing materials [viz. waste and secondary materials] more efficiently” (US EPA, 2002).

The research group effort is directly impacting waste and secondary material management practices by elucidating the complex physicochemical and mass transfer processes associated with their reuse, disposal, and long-term management and by addressing the methodologies of their environmental assessment.
